In the early 1850s, a group of New York Yacht Club members built a yacht to sail to England. The real purpose of the trip was two-fold: to show off U.S. shipbuilding skills, and to make money competing in regattas.

The America, from the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London

In 1851, the America won the Royal Yacht Squadron's 53-mile regatta around the Isle of Wight by 18 minutes, a feat considered even more impressive given the yacht had a slow start due to a fouled anchor and was well behind when she finally got underway. The Squadron's "One Hundred Sovereign Cup" was later renamed after the original winning yacht, and thus, the America'c Cup was born.

Enhance your home with this handmade, one-of-a-kind, seasonal wall art hanging, depicting the America. The paper cut silhouette is behind a 10x12" black wood frame with gold trim. A saw-tooth picture hanger is attached to the back, for easy hanging!
