William Ellery was one of the most prominent citizens of Newport and Rhode Island from the mid-eighteenth century until his death in 1820. Elery was a merchant, attorney, politician, political appointee, and intellectual whose tireless work on behalf of his fellow citizens has yet to be fully recognized and appreciated.

Fully active in Rhode Island during the years leading up to, during, and after the American Revolution and the birth of our nation, Ellery took a place in the national narrative when he left Rhode Island to serve in the Continental Congress in 1776. While there, he signed the Declaration of Independence.

Since 1854, the Newport Historical Society has collected and preserved five centuries of history and continues to document Newport's unique contribution to our national narrative.

Prepared and edited by the staff of the Newport Historical Society, 79 pages, hardcover.
