The cutlass is known for being the 17th and 18th-century sailor's weapon of choice. Not only was it robust enough to hack through heavy ropes, canvas, and wood, but it was short enough to use in relatively close quarters, such as boarding actions, in the rigging, or below decks. The cutlass was known to be used by many a pirate and privateer, and was most likely carried by the sailors, pirates, and seamen who came in and out of Newport harbor.
